Zhang Lixuan, a city volunteer from the Beijing University of Chemical Technology, is teaching the basics of the sign language at a volunteer station at the Imperial College in eastern Beijing. “During the Paralympics we are to serve many disabled people. To learn the sign language enables us to better communicate with them,” Zhang said.
Zhang learned the sign language in her spare time. “When they learned that I knew the sign language, they asked me to teach them, because every one of us wants to do something for the Paralympics,” Zhang told this reporter, adding that her fellow volunteers were such quick learners that they were already able to communicate in simple sign language. “Though the sign language isn’t easy to learn, we are practicing it whenever we can, so that we are better prepared for the Paralympics.”
