In Men’s Triathlon on August 19, an athlete slipped while starting his fourth lap in the cycling leg. Seven cyclists were too close behind to avoid a multi-bike collision. Seconds later, most of them helped themselves to their feet and resumed competition.
According to Liu Nian, a Beijing Sport University student at the scene, he and fellow volunteers lost no time in removing the bicycles to return the swimming-cycling-running event to order. Seeing that a Russian competitor was unable to move, three paramedics carefully transferred him to a stretcher. With the assistance of the volunteers, the athlete was carried level to a nearby medical station.
