“Trust me, I’m the best!” “I believe I can fly.”, ”I will be the winner and fly to Beijing!”, ”Impossible is nothing!”……These self-confident words came from the mouths of the 22 contestants in the final competition of the National New Concept English Reciting Contest held in Fuzhou yesterday afternoon. The contestants come from Fuzhou, Lianjiang, Quanzhou, Jinjiang ect. Several months ago, they were among the thousands of contestants. But now, they became the top 22 and of which 9 contestants won the entrance tickets to Beijing, where the national final will be held in late August.
The 22 contestants are mostly students. But they are of different ages. There are university students while there are primary school students. The youngest contestant with the name Qian Kun is 9 years old and became one of the most popular contestants. Each contestant should do 3 things: a brief short self-introduction, reciting the passage from New Concept English, answering the questions raised by the judges. The passage recited was not known before hand. That’s to say, each contestant are able to recite every passage in the book. Any way, most of the contestants had done a good job, and the Q&A period expressed the best part of their abilities: English language ability and more other abilities.
Bai Zhiyong, represent from FLTRP, said before the contest, that reciting is a good way to learn a language. “If you have read all the 300 Tang-Poems, you can at least recite it instead of creating.” As a result, a lot of classic English language learning materials became popular from 1980s. New Concept English by L.G. Alexander as one of the best teaching materials became more and more popular in China. “Several generations had used this text book.”
Ji Chunsheng, director of Fuzhou New Concept Education also attended the contest. All the 22 contestants are through the selection in New Concept Education. The contest is the first time in Fujian. “The contestants in Fujian are very good, but they should remember, there will be about 100 contestants are from 10000 participants in the first round.” Mr Bai has just attended the Liaoning District Contest, he said, “the English ability of the contestants is very surprising. The English Education in China has developed rapidly.”
The 9 winners have won the prize and also a chance to win a heavier cup. CB keeps in touch with them and will make reports in the following time.
